The sauna is a big part of the Finnish lifestyle. There are over 2 million saunas in Finland, while there live only 5,5 million people in the country. Saunas exist in other cultures as well, but in Finland they have become entwined in the national culture. Traditional saunas are heated by wood, burned in a stove. The latter (a smoke-sauna) is the original sauna and according to most Finns the best. The door is closed after the wood has burned down (and most of the smoke has escaped), leaving the embers to heat the sauna to the proper temperature. Basic etiquette in the sauna is very simple. You first take off all your clothes. It is considered polite to shower before going in. Stay in as long as you feel comfortable, and return to the sauna several times if you wish. When you come out of the sauna, jump into the water, roll in the snow or simply take a shower.
